“The greatest truths are often the simplest.” This sentence conveys a profound philosophy: the most magnificent truths are often the simplest ones. “This article showcases the story of Ma Zhiye, a science and engineering enthusiast who is passionate about the way of tea. He is devoted to and enamored with the tea culture, demonstrating his love and dedication to.
缘起:
九岁的小男孩第一次接触茶文化是作为小小志愿者,跟随家人参加灵岩寺的施茶活动。施茶,意为施舍茶水,亦称送茶,即免费提供茶水,属于慈善性质。中国是世界上茶的原产地,唐代开元中期泰山灵岩寺是佛教圣地,佛门关怀和饮茶习俗结合一起,便逐步形成了施茶。泰山脚下寺院古朴静穆,人们秩序井然,从僧侣师傅或志愿者手中接过茶水口中称谢,轻抿一口茶香四溢。几个小志愿者端着小茶壶,在夏日树荫下,忙碌中开心不已。从此,小男孩喜欢上了茶。(图1、2)
Origin:
In this origin story, we learn about a nine-year-old boy’s first encounter with tea culture. He volunteered to participate in the tea offering activity at Lingyan Temple, thus beginning his affinity with tea culture. Tea offering is a charitable act, symbolizing the spirit of charity and sharing. China is the birthplace of tea, and Lingyan Temple on Mount Tai during the Tang Dynasty was a sacred Buddhist site. The care of Buddhism combined with the tea-drinking customs gradually formed the tradition of tea offering. In the temples at the foot of Mount Tai, the atmosphere is serene and tranquil. People orderly receive tea from monks, masters, or volunteers, express their gratitude, and savor the aroma of the tea. A few young volunteers busy themselves with small teapots under the shade of trees in the summer, feeling very joyful. From that time on, the young boy developed a love for tea.
传道:
负责施茶活动的恰好是“正和白茶推广大使”郑海萍女士,看到孩子眼中的欢喜,邀请他参加少儿茶艺课,进一步了解中国博大精深的茶文化。能得茶道大师的青睐,马知也欣然前往。从最基本的茶叶分类,到形状味道,茶器种类作用,冲泡技巧等等事项,都无比吸引着马知也的好奇心。但是,练习的过程是枯燥的,考核也是严格的,并不能仅凭兴趣就能达到老师的高标准。马知也逐渐明白,对于茶文化,需要的是内心坚定的热爱。寒来暑往,马知也跟着海萍大师习茶,参加各种公益活动,也为同龄人进行茶文化讲座。茶已然成为了他生活的一部分。(图3、4、5、6)
Preaching:
In this section, it is introduced that the person in charge of the tea offering activity happens to be Ms. Zheng Haiping, the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of “Zhenghe white tea”. Seeing the child’s joy, she invited him to participate in a children’s tea art class to gain a deeper understanding of China’s rich tea culture. Being able to gain recognition from a master of tea art, Ma Zhiye was also very happy to attend. From the basic classification, shape, taste of tea leaves, to the types and uses of tea ware, brewing techniques, etc., all greatly aroused Ma Zhiye’s curiosity.The process of practice is tedious, and the assessment is strict. It is not possible to meet the high standards of the teacher based solely on interest. Ma Zhiye gradually understands that a firm inner passion is needed for tea culture. Throughout the changing seasons, Ma Zhiye followed Master Haiping to learn tea, participate in various public welfare activities, and give lectures on tea culture to peers. Tea has become a part of his life.
交流:
2018年马知也随团队去日本东京,在古石场参加了与日本里千家茶道的交流学习活动。几位日本茶道大师为大家演示了抹茶的制作流程,并为青少年茶艺爱好者们准备了“和果子”的手作活动。茶室墙壁悬挂“和风贯东西”的书法卷轴,蕴含着文化无国界的深刻道义。在日本期间,马知也还参加了草月流花道传人的花艺课程,茶道和花道都是中日两国推崇的传统文化,互相切磋共同发展。2019年,在英国体验了地道的下午茶文化,感受到另外一种独特的茶文化。关于先倒茶还是先加奶这个千古话题,孩子们也是各抒己见,也许“和而不同”才是真正的文化交流。(图7、8、9、10)
Communicate:
In 2018, Ma Zhiye went to Tokyo, Japan with a team to participate in a cultural exchange program with the Urasenke School of Japanese Tea Ceremony at an ancient stone field. Several Japanese tea masters demonstrated the process of making matcha and prepared a handmade “wagashi” activity for young tea enthusiasts. The calligraphy scroll hanging on the tea room wall, “Cultural Fusion from East to West,” embodies the profound meaning of culture without borders. During his time in Japan, Ma Zhiye also participated in the Ikebana course of the Kado School, as both tea and flower arrangement are traditional cultures respected by China and Japan, mutually learning and developing together. In 2019, he experienced the authentic British afternoon tea culture in the UK, feeling another unique tea culture. As for the age-old question of whether to pour tea first or add milk first, the children also expressed their own opinions. Perhaps “harmony in diversity” is the true essence of cultural exchange.
磨炼:
在16届世界茶叶博览会上,马知也当选“青少年茶文化推广大使”,并在斗茶大赛当中有幸成为主评审官山东农业大学向勤锃博士的助手,为选手们冲泡“白牡丹”、“白毫银针”、“寿眉”、“贡眉”四大白茶品类,助力选手们品茶猜茶。选手当中既有年近八旬的资深茶友,也有小学生组成的小小爱好者队伍,在这场茶道盛会中,马知也近距离体验了茶道大师们专业严谨的态度,也感受到了全国各地的茶爱好者的那份执着热情。(图11、12、13、14、15、16)
Tempering:
During the 16th World Tea Expo, Ma Zhiye was elected as the “Youth Tea Culture Promotion Ambassador”and had the honor of serving as the chief judge in the tea competition at Shandong Agricultural University, assisting Dr. Xiang Qinzeng, brewing the four major categories of white tea - “White Peony”, “Silver Needle”, “Longevity Eyebrow”, and “Tribute Eyebrow” - to help the contestants taste and guess the teas. Among the contestants were both senior tea enthusiasts in their late seventies and a team of young enthusiasts from elementary school. During this grand tea event, Ma Zhiye had a close experience of the professional and rigorous attitude of the tea masters, and also felt the dedication and passion of tea lovers from all over the country.
升华:
疫情期间,大家足不出户,于是兴起了“云喝茶”,虽不能陪在你身边,却可天涯共饮一杯茶。在那段严峻的时期,茶文化温暖而治愈的特性愈发显现。在此期间马知也进行了线上茶文化推广活动,在中小学网课的间隙加入公益讲座,很好的丰富了孩子们的学习内容。疫情之后,作为国际学校的学生,他还为校内外的外国友人教授茶艺。
Sublimation:
During the COVID-19 period, as people stayed at home, the trend of “cloud tea drinking” emerged. Although unable to be by your side, we can still share a cup of tea across the world. During this challenging period, the warm and healing nature of tea culture became more apparent. Ma Zhiye conducted online tea culture promotion activities during this time, and provided public lectures in the intervals of online classes for primary and secondary schools, enriching the children’s learning content. After the epidemic, as a student of the international department of Foreign Language School, he also taught tea art to foreign friends inside and outside the school.
融合:
对茶文化多年的热爱,让马知也逐渐体会到“大道至简”的道理,看似简单的“水元素”和“木元素”,却因不同的生长环境、不同的炒制方式、迥异的茶器、甚至于不同的冲泡时间,从而产生出各不相同的味道。这像极了马知也未来想要从事的计算机科学专业,看似最简单的“0”和“1”两个代码,却会通过各种排列组合写出变化无穷的代码,创造出改变世界的网络科技。所以他利用自己的专业知识搭建网站进行助农售茶,并亲自设计了茶文化主题的AI智能键盘,并衷心希望在海外留学的日子里,能够继续把中国茶文化分享给世界上更多的朋友。因为,热爱可抵漫长岁月!(图17、18)
Fusion:
His years of love for tea culture gradually led Ma Zhiye to understand the principle of “simplicity in the grand path”. The seemingly simple “water element” and “wood element” produce different tastes due to different growth environments, different processing methods, distinct tea sets, and even different brewing times.This is very much like what Ma Zhiye would like to do in the future, majoring in computer science. It seems that the simplest “0” and “1” codes can generate endless variations through various combinations, creating world-changing network technology. Therefore, he uses his professional knowledge to build websites to help sell tea to farmers, and personally designs an AI intelligent keyboard with a tea culture theme. He sincerely hopes that during his days studying abroad, he can continue to share Chinese tea culture with more friends around the world. Because, love can withstand the test of time!
